Sumatran Tigers are critically endangered and can disappear within 10 years if no effective measures are taken to preserve the population. In the beginning of the century, there were about 100,000 tigers roaming the planet. Their population was reduced greatly due to poaching and habitat loss. Nowadays, there are about 6,000 tigers on the planet and the population of the Sumatran tiger is not more than 400-500 species. Of eight known tiger species only five have survived.
Hunting the Sumatran Tiger is illegal, yet poaching still occurs. Sumatran Tigers are hunted for body parts and pelts that are used in medicine. China is considered the greatest consumer of Tiger products, yet other countries also have this tradition. It is important to change the attitude of people towards the use of Tiger products to eliminate the practice of poaching.
Nowadays, the Sumatran tiger lives in the wild and in zoos. The population found currently at zoos was bred from 37 captive tigers. Zoos in North America, Europe, and Australia are developing their breeding programs, yet not all breedings are successful.
Since the need of protecting the species in the wild has been realized of late, the Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Conservation Strategy was established to develop conservation plans. One of the objectives is to stop the reduction of Sumatran Tiger habitat. Cameras, satellites, and other means are used to determine the habitat and threats for the Sumatran tiger in the wild.
Meanwhile, the population of the species is very vulnerable and may be reduced greatly by a natural catastrophe. Hopefully, conservation efforts will turn out to be a success and Sumatran Tigers will escape the fate of those species already extinct.
